Update: Five older firefighters in full dress uniforms rode the F train this morning. They were all standing together. Quiet. Not making eye contact with anyone. I imagine most of the people in the car weren't thinking about 9/11 before getting on the subway, I certainly wasn't, it was just another day. But those firefighters forced issue and the car was unusually quiet and still. At the Jay Street station a chubby middle aged professional woman entered the car. Upon seeing the firemen she immediately went over and gave one a big long hug. The fireman stiffened arms slack, then softened and hugged her back. One of the other men started visibly tearing up. The lady then wordlessly hugged each of the other men. Our end of the car started clapping, and the clapping continued all the way to Delancy Street where the men exited after muttering thank yous.

Your update makes me miss New York so much. I always thought those towers were ugly when I was a kid. But I miss seeing them in the sky. Love seeing them being built. The picture got me but now with the subway story I think I have to go for a cry...

First of all, your writing style is amazing! I am stunned by your articulate ability to transfer emotions in an amazingly vivid manner... After reading posts on your blog, and seeing this gorgeous and aptly titled picture I have to confess that I teared up, for many reasons...
